New to 550; acouple of questions

Hi
I have a '08 550 6SP and while replacing the CDV last night I notice oil and grud around the power steering pump and near the steering rack. Specificly, there is a square cut out in the first/front splash gaurd. The cutout has a plastic black grid. The greasy grubby area is just infront of that grid once the splash gaurd is removed. Any idea what that could be?
Also has anyone used a 3M clear front gaurd on their car?
