I heard that the new 5 series LCI models sold in Asia is different from the rest of the world - it still has the old N52 engine, but re-tuned for more power. For example, the N52 on the 523i delivers 190 hp, some 20 hp more than the pre-LCI models.

For the rest of the world, the LCI models come with the new N53 direct fuel injection engines which is more fuel economical. Apparently, BMW was concerned with the high sulphur content fuels sold here.

Can anyone confirm this ?

Yap. I live in Taiwan and just got delivered a E60 525 LCI (manufactured in July), the engine is still N52 with 218 PS.
The 523 LCI is also equipped with N52 but with upgraded 190 PS. They also provided E90 323i and 325i with N52 engine.

Hi! envoytheguy, is your 523i LCI equipped with the N52 engine as well? I have read somewhere that the 6 cylinder engine models for the US (528i), Australia, and other parts of East Asia are still using the older N52 engines. Think the newer direct injection engine (N53) is no longer valvetronic as well.
