Hi, I am new here and I have a silly question. When I?m driving down hill, I put my steptronic from ?D? to ?N? to free my bimmer. After she slow down, let say to 55 MPH, I move it back to ?D?. Will this operation damage the tranny?

Any input will be appreciated.

It won't likely do any damage, but it is not recommended. Just keep it in Drive...

I wouldn't do it because you are losing the engine braking if needed.

Ditto.
Why would you move it to N anyway?

To save gas i presume...
I never do that. Also above all if u need to throttle the car fast due to an emergency u'll loose time.

Welcome Not recommended to take out of gear for reasons stated of engine braking. Also any emergency maneuvers such as to avoid collision would be difficult if not in gear. I often use DS (or Sport) when in medium to heavy stop and go traffic just to get more engine braking and the ability to quickly accelerate if necessary to avoid nutty drivers. Does not hurt tranny and does save on the brakes.

It is not recommended to put it in N when driving.

It might harm the transmission when you put it back to D.

When you are driving down a hill, take you foot of the acc pedal.

to put the engine to idle revs... when you put back to d you have to reapply the throttle , otherwise
you risk damaging the gearbox

I doubt very much if it would damage the gearbox doing it every now and again especially if you select d at low speed.

You guys who asked why anyone would want to select neutral whilst driving - have you never played the rolling game?

I live at the bottem of a series of hills and if I gauge it just right I can roll all the way to my drive. Its about 1/2 a mile of fun. The last 90 degree bend is always a thrill.
