My Ride: 2008 550i M-sport, retrofitted heated M-sport steering wheel with paddles, Sport-auto transmission
Generally speaking, that unit is designed to be replaced as a single unit. It's the SAT shifter that comes in several pieces.
On a side note, that unit was reprogrammed right before I did my SAT retrofit, so the EGS software should be pretty much up to date. If you do need to program, don't hesitate to drop me a line as I have the cable for our E60's.

Finally got around to fitting the shifter this weekend and it worked without issue. Wife wanted to know why I was switching shifters since "the old one works, doesn't it?". The best answer I could give was that the replacement is far better cosmetically - which is true.
GF has been warned against repeat of such friskiness, at least in the car...
And in the interest of others who may read this, there's no need to remove the console to get the shifter out.
-remove the iDrive knob
-remove surround from shifter and the three Torx screws underneath
-pry up the trim panel using a plastic spudger
-disconnect menu button cable
-remove the three large Torx bolts holding the shifter to the floor. the rear one on mine pulled the standoff bolt out when loosening
-remove the two small Torx screws holding the neutral interlock override to the shifter
-remove the cable from the shifter
-wiggle, twist, pull, curse and pull the shift assembly out of its nest
Installation is reverse of removal (cursing optional). Some of the metal clips from the trim panel may stay in the console, remove them and replace on the posts on the trim panel before re-fitting.

Noted peculiarity since fitting the new shifter: If I want to shift directly from P to R after a start, I find I have to push it to the R twice before it'll engage. The first time the gate is blocked. EGSs update needed?

I have my original gear shift, egs, and console piece for sale if you are looking to replace your setup. It's from a 08' 528i LCI. I upgraded to the SAT gear shift.
Let me know if your interested.

No need, thanks. I've got a new one already - just the oddness with reverse now.
