Transmission is most likely going out. Its not at the breaking stage yet but it is getting there. I would start looking into getting one from a salvage or junk yard. I replaced mine at it cost almost 7K from the dealer

Ok, let's ask the next obvious question: How did you check the fluid level?

I had a 04 530i also and my tranny started doing the same thing at just over 100k and got worse and worse the dealership kept saying I needed a new one. I asked for a fluid change and they said the fluid was life time the problem got worse. Well I got turned on to the indy shops and they said a whole different thing. They said it could be the megatronics unit or megatronics sleeve needed changing. So it wasn't the unit so they changed the sleeve and the problem was still there And by then the car was going into limp mode real bad I had to stop the car and turn it off and back on for it to reset. I had no power coming off stop signs or lights. Went back to the indy shop and the opened the tranny to find my gears were grinding down and chipping off. They cleaned it out and gave me new fluid but the damage was done. However I learned how to drive the car on that bad tranny all the way to 276k miles. But thanks to this site and bimmer fest I am well informed and i have a 550i now and it gets the royal treatment

Whole tranny. They opened it up and everything was done the gears were burned up they said the oil was toasted so they had to put in a new tranny luckily I had warranty still so it was covered with a $100 deductible. I would advise you to get the warranty if you can
