Unhappy Need help! - BMW E61 SZL/DSC/ABS Lights

Hey guys I recently purchased a 07 530xi Sport Wagon (servotronic). I got it with the cluster lit up, heavy steering and soft brake pedal... Scanned the car, lots of errors.

SZL:
9501 - Steering angle sensor not adjusted

DSC:
5E4E - Wheel-speed sensor, supply, front left
5E24 - Wheel speed sensor, supply, front left
5E4C - Wheel speed sensor, supply, front right
5EBA - Steering-angle sensor, plausibility
5E5A - Wheel speed general

(more errors but these were the ones I think that have to do with the lights)

I focused on the SZL steering angle sensor, I tried to calibrate it with protool but I got a connection error, so I tried Ista+, service options and set steering angle but that could not communicate with the SAS either. I took the SAS apart and cleaned the sensor disc but still the same issue and codes.

Checked fuses that had to do with SZL, no issues.

I found a used SZL combination with the SAS and installed it, made sure everything was installed properly. Factory coded it with protool and changed the vin. Still could not adjust the angle sensor on protool, same communication error. Same 9501 error. Tried Ista+ again and this time it let me into the SZL steering angle calibration but it failed and said it might not have been installed properly. Took it apart again and double checked the orientation arrows and all wiring. Still the same issue.

After a few more tries with Ista+ it is not communicating again, same issue as the first unit.

Inpa and protool show the steering angle reading as -1440.154 or !144.20 etc.

Battery voltage and everything is good.

Not sure what else to check for this, I could try re-programming the new SAS using winkfp but im pretty sure protools did that already. I can try replacing the front wheel speed sensors but I am pretty sure those are there because of something wrong with the SAS (after reading some other threads).

Anyone have issues calibrating the SAS on a E60 xdrive with servotronic (no active steering) ?

I've changed many of those with used parts and have never had an issue. You install, set VIN, reset time then calibrate. That's it. If you've done all that either there's something wrong with the wiring or you received a bad module. I've never used protool so I can't say if that's part of the issue.

Check to make sure your rotations from right to left has the same amount of turns and calibrate when wheels are straight.

Thanks for the reply!

Are you using winkfp to set the vin, reset time and then ista to calibrate? Have you ever had a similar issue with some of the bad modules in the past?

I've never had a bad connection issue. I've had the light trifecta though. I set VIN with KFP the reset time with tool32 and calibrate with INPA and done. Takes about 5 mins tops to do all 3. It will not work unless you reset time

Okay, hopefully it is just a issue with protool or ISTA then. I will try this tomorrow, set VIN with KFP then reset system time using tool32, for INPA I did not see a place to calibrate the angle. Can you explain where that would be? most things I have found use ISTA for that.

I can't remember. I'd have to hook up to my car and I just did the calibration last month when I did a complete suspension refresh. It should be in the body section but I'd have to look at it to tell you the steps

Okay no problem, if you do get some time please let me know. I'll give it a shot tomorrow evening. Thanks again!

I checked again to see what ista was showing and it's seeing it as a active steering car, this is what the original SAS was doing on ista too. The new module on insta displayed the proper steering options for a bit but now it's doing the same thing and showing the active settings when my car doesn't have that. I have attached a pic.

Also I was able to code it with winkfp but on tool32 I could not find the system time reset for szl_60.

Okay I figured out why it was seeing active steering, I wasn't scanning the car on insta first.

Now I get it to go to the adjustment menu but it sitll shows that the szl is not installed right. I have removed and checked the connectors multiple times and tried both SAS and both clock springs with no luck.

Protool still can't calibrate it either.

Any ideas?
