Take a quick look at this link and the video. ( I hope this link works)

This looks like fun. I notice they show it in Germany. I hope it's available currently to the rest of us. I can find some uses for it. I've got to try it!

It?s part of ConnectedDrive. That probably won?t be available in the U.S. for at least 2-3 years.

That is very cool. This is something worthwhile in a BMW Assist susbscription. US needs this now.

Now what the car really needs is wireless Ethernet. Then this can all be done as you car sits in your garage or the parking lot. You should be able to sync up your iPod too if it sits in your car.

Such updates are done through "Telematics" via the GSM telephone network and the embedded SIM.

At least that's the case in UK.

Oooh Yeah!! Now that would be sweet! I'm sure somebody has it already. It shouldn't be too difficult.

Perhaps you overlook that Google - incl. Google Maps - is a U.S. grown technology.

There are always different technologies available in different markets.

That is wicked.

I got a good laugh out of the guy posting that all you need is a good map. Dang Grandpa get with the program. Maps are a total pain in the arse when it comes to big city driving. Washington D.C. is a nightmare with a hand held map.

So [supposedly] most technologically advanced country, mother of the Internet, home of Google, owner of the GPS satellite system, leader in the space race is not getting it for another 3 years. Wow...

Is there a big deal here? Cool factor over functionality?

Don't we have this already provided we pay for it - BMW Assist?

Just call 'em up, ask them for a particular business/restaurant etc and they upload the data to your iDrive. Navigate/Call etc.

The Google Maps thing is just a DIY version. At least you can use the BMW Assist technique on the move.
