Hey All

Don't really see a Forum for this topic but does anyone know if Navigation can be added to a 04' E60. If so how much and what is the best way to go about it???

Thanks for any advice

Nav wasn't available from the factory for first year US E60s until around January 04. Before that time, there was a Nav prep option. If you ordered it, the Nav retrofit was relatively easy and inexpensive. After January, the option was no longer available.

So you're in luck if you've got an early model with the prep option. If not, you're pretty much out of luck.

I don't know where you're from but if you live out of town I think you're much better off practically and financially with a portable nav system than trying to cram BMW's system in your dashboard. I use a TomTom 910 for everything but the BMW and find that it's much easier to use, just as accurate, has more features like a touch screen and I can program it faster than either iDrive or voice (for sure). The BMW unit loses most of the secondary road resolution at the 1/2 mile range making it impossible to just look at it to see a shorter route on secondary roads without programing it. Yeah, it may or may not look cool stuck up on the window but when "Mandy" is cooing your directions to you who cares - the artificial voice on my Bimmer is worse than my 1989 Mac II. Listening to it say "Alexandria" will remind you of somebody puking in the toilet at a frat party. You can pick one up at Costco for $469 or right from TomTom for a few bucks more. You'll get Canada and Europe for free and, for some reason, Guam and I think the Virgin Islands. It's also nice to pop it in your briefcase when you leave the BMW at the airport parking lot and take it with you wherever you're going. You can also pre-program it for destination routes of any size. My advice - save your money, time and leave your dashboard alone. You're not going to be all that happy with BMW's third-rate GPS. Oh...one more thing...it has a Bluetooth connection for your phone. Try cramming that in the dashboard, too!

i was on this position too.. since my car was built 09/03 i had the old TCU with no BT capability on it. however, some posts on this thread was able to swap TCU to have BT, for a price. starting from $500 just for the TCU + installation.. so that totals to $$$ OTD. now, for a price say $600.. i can get myself a descent nuvi (im looking at 660 for $630) that has BT already. just like *geokr* mentioned.. its handy. its portable. and BT/NAV on one. and oh.. i would have to guess that MORE phones are compatible to aftermarket gps (BT) than OEM BT (not sure so dont qoute me).. my 2c.

NAV parts are extremely hard to find, even through the dealer. Since NAV was offered as an option in your 8/04 E60, you probably do not have the 6UA option which is necessary to retrofit NAV. The 6UA option was for E60's produced when NAV was not available as an option for late 2003 production models. BMW did offer a special price of $1800 to install NAV for those with the 6UA option about 2 years ago. You can call BMWNA or the parts dept. at a BMW dealership, give them you VIN # and they can tell you if you can be retrofitted for NAV.

Here's what I know.

Depending on whether your US E60 does or does not have nav, you get one of two different computer network systems. I think they're called CCC and M-ASK, but I never remember which is which.

If your car does not have nav, but does have the "nav prep" option, BMW installed the network system for nav equipped cars and a retrofit is possible. However, I believe that without the correct network, you're SOL for a nav retrofit.
