I want the Active cruise control system. At the carshow, the BMW reps said that it wasn't a retofit. Is that right?
Correct and if you ever get a Laser Detector in the car it will go off, thus why I don't get that option...

?Not the greatest? is a nice way to descript it, compare with other NAV system, it?s the worst of all. I didn?t regret purchase NAV on my e60 at all, because I don?t want cable and NAV sitting on the dash, it doesn?t look good on a 60000 dollar car.

Are you saying that the BMW NAV system is the worst of all compared to other NAV systems? I would appreciate your objective insight, as I am deciding whether to order it or not.

Indeed the BMW NAV system is the worst of the luxury brands. After having said that, I would still get the NAV system with my next BMW. I can't live without it.

If you don't mind, what about the system is inferior?

I'd still get it despite it's quality. It's directed me everywhere I've asked it to take me...found me the banks I needed when out of town, found the closest car wash before our meet and greets out of town, and found various restaurants when required. It's directed me through rain and snow storms at night, when I'm not in familiar territory and can barely see where I'm going. Just my opinion.

Input of info into the nav, graphics, dvd based v.s. satellite, etc.

BMW NAV system is inferior in many ways i.e you can't search for a location based on name, doesn't tell you whether the destination is on the right or left on you get there, etc.. There are many more reasons. I'm sure plenty of other people will chime in. But, like I said before, I'd still get the NAV.

From current production, you can.

If legacy owners are "lucky" they may get this via a CIP upgrade.

I think this is the point. Who cares about graphics and lack of useless extra functions if the system works like you want? My business Navi does everything I want and much more. Coupled with HUD, it's the best available system in car industry. I have in my another car a separate nav unit, but with lousy 5" screen and small buttons it's pain to use. Other OEM units I have tested does not come even close to iDrive if we speak about easy of use. Of course, some nice functions would be welcome, for example auto-zoom related to speed of the car. But, meanwhile, all important functions work well and the usability is great.

I truly regret not having this option. If you can get it, do so. If you can retrofit it, do so. Other benefits also come with NAV like in the old models you get MP3 while cars w/o NAV cannot get MP3. Also with your voice commands you get speach to text function while dialing a name from your phone book, w/o NAV you need to save the name/phone number in your car. Another cool thing you get in the US with NAV is a larger screen, not the wimpy little screen you have w/o NAV
