NAV for Vehicles Without?
#31
I live in Tokyo where I am blessed with shops which can install all sorts of toys for E60 including aftermarket NAV system. As you can see in this example, they have relocated the original i-drive screen to the passenger side and added a new 8 inch screen for NAV and DVD/TV without interfering with the integrity of the
i-drive. Pretty clever isn't it?

forgive me for my suspision about the fake picture you have posted, but since you drive on the left in japan, they have some how fitted your steering wheel on the wrong side...........ooppppps

Wow, I don't need to take any of this. Forgive me for my poor English as my native language is Japanese but let me try and explain a few things.
1) Yes we do drive on the left side of the road in Japan. BUT, as far as imported
cars are concerned, our government allows the steering wheels to be placed on
either side. If you are say on toll highway, there are dedicated check-out lanes
with cashier booth for cars with steering wheels fitted on the left hand side.
If you still think I am lying, please do come and visit Japan and you can see I
am telling the truth.
2) The photograph I attached is not FAKE. It is the work of BMW after market
specialist called A-Tack Company in Yokohama, Japan. Why don't you click
on the link I posted before calling me a liar.
3) The reason for 2 screens. The original LCD screen is of very low resolution
(400 x 240 pixels with only 256 colors) therefore it is not ideal for playing
DVD or for watching TV etc.. Secondly(this is just my guess), we are very
much spoiled by available NAV systems which have far more detailed graphics
and detailed maps than the original NAV system offered by BMW. And believe
me, it is quite common to see imported cars with 2nd NAV screen in Japan.
Lastly, according to A-Tack, it is impossible to mess with i-drive system
without causing unwanted troubles, so they just added an independent sytem.
Anyways, I am very disappointed with all the accusations by the member of this board. My intention was never to deceive anyone but honestly to share some of the information that I have from this side of the world. So SAYONARA and all the best to E60 owners of America. :'(

For your info, the site address for A-Tack is http://www.a-tack.net/index2.htm
for those of you who can download Japanese site.

hey tokyo, not all members here are quick to call bull**** on posts.
guys, can't see how you can call out something as fake just by one picture.
when i was in japan a couple of years ago, i saw right-hand drive porsches.
as far as over the top gizmos, go to akibahara. you'll understand.
anyway, if it is, who cares? the problem is with the poster (probably crying for attention).
but if it's not, then it's just wrong and NOT cool.

Thank you daydok.
I believe until 10 years ago, all American cars were imported into Japan with steering wheels on the left hand side. And we heard whining from big 3 automakers saying how we Japanese never buy American cars and thereby creating trade imbalance etc..etc.. Talk about whining without making any efforts!
I mean if they are serious about breaking into Japanese market, the least they could have done is do the conversion and have steering wheels on the right hand side for the Japanese road. But oddly enough, as far as European cars are concerned, vast majority (something like 80%) prefers the steering wheels on the left hand side. Many of us feel it is a status symbol to drive a car with steering wheel on the left hand side and use the dedicated lane for toll payment. LOL.
Merzbow;
I just called A-Tack and found out the reason for 2 head units.
Both are Alpine. The first one is a DVD unit DVA-7899J and the second unit
is 5.1ch processor PKG-H701S and just for your information, the new LCD screen is NV8-N555SS. (I believe these are Japanes market only Alpine models or model number maybe different in U.S.)
If you still doubt me, please call them at 011-81-45-595-1730 (no guarantee they can speak English though!!)
Have a good day from Tokyo, Japan.

Very impressive.. I would love to see a closer picture of the right side of the dashboard where they intergrated the I-Drive screen in the wood. It looks very clean and I bet it took a lot of time for them to make it so nice.. Very impressive.
Hope you can show us some more pictures because I really am impressed by this aftermarket work that is done!!
TIA!
