I found if you look up information on a destination - for example gas stations - get the list to show then just go back to the map - all of the listed gas stations appear on the map.

This function was also present on the navi. of the E39.

I'm a little lost here. I've had the car about two weeks and didn't know it'll show things like gas stations? Restaurants too? Other points of interest like ATMs??

It will find banks, restaurants, BMW dealers, etc. and show them with map symbols. I don't recall if it shows ATMs. Select the Information on Current Location or Information on Destination option. The e39 had this as well. One problem however is that the symbols can obscure a large part of the map, which didn't happen on the e39. The other problem is that I'm not sure how to deselect the option and clear the symbols once I've found what I want, other than trial and error.
