Nasty Smell coming from vents.

if the microfilters are very dirty then it will create a nasty smell...also there is this machine called the mist machine and it deoderizes the car throught the heater core where most of the bacteria is kept... i had the same problem. when i used this machine the problem hasnt come back till this day... hope this helps.

My Ride: 2008 535i: June 6th start build, complete June 17th, at NY Port July 5th, at dealer July 10th, took delivery Friday July 13- Plantimum Bronze/Natural Brown Leather/Light Poplar, Sport Package, Sport Auto, Active Steering, Premium Package, CWP & PDC. Dinan Performance Software 384hp & 421 ft/lbs.

I had it with all my E39's and e60's.
Start the car and turn the air on and put the fan on high. Get an aerosol can of Lysol and open the hood and mist it round the two air filters while AC is running. Then put on recirculate and spray lysol on passenger footwell while AC is running.
That usually cures mine for about a year.
