Need opinions ?

Photos are of an OEM tire I have been keeping for a spare in case I wreck a tire.

Today, I noticed that sucker has a nail stuck in it. That is odd because the nail was in the tire for some time while it was mounted and in use and it never went flat nor leaked air.

In my opinion this could be plugged and run with no problem. I estimate about 4500 miles left on the tire.

Do you agree with plugging or not?

Thanks,

It's fixable. It's nowhere near the sidewall. Patch/plug it instead of plugging it. You'll lose the speed rating but for normal highway driving it will be OK.

by the look of that sidewall on the inside of the tire, the tire is junk. It was rode flat.

Sorry, but it never rode flat.

I surely don't see any indications of running that tire flat. In fact, I cannot see the sidewall on the inside of the tire.

it'll be fine as a spare, but there is no way a conti sportcontact2 with that little tread on it is going to make it another 4500 miles IMO. I was lucky to get 15-16k total life out of the rears.

No problem there - that looks eminently fixable, and another +1 for patching rather than plugging (particularly as the tire is already dismounted).

+1.

Patching is a better/safer fix than a plug.

Not so - those are molding marks not inside sidewall damage.

The tire may be plugged/patched by any good tire shop. As already noted its speed rating after repair will default to "Q" ... don't drive at sustained high speeds after repair.
