I picked up a nail right at the top of the LR tire of my 2007 530i sport as the sidewall meets the tread. Car has RFTs.

Nail is still there but tire is not leaking (both right and left sides show the same PSI) and the TPM system shows all "greens".

Independent tire shop says they cannot fix it because of the location, but also suggested that I just ride on it until the TPM system flags a pressure loss. They confirmed that there is no signs of leakage.

Problem is, lease expires in 5 months and there's no way that this tire is going to pass inspection on turn-in with the nail there. Still, the tread shows no signs of wear and I don't want to shell out $250+ unnecessarily.

I thought about flipping the tire inside-out to hide it, but the tires are directional. The tire shop suggested that I leave the nail in place and remove it right before pulling into the dealership lot (right!).

I don't mind paying for a repair, but a full replacement? Moreover, there's no way to ascertain if the nail punctured all the way through until it's removed -- and then it's too late!

Is there any way to get this thing fixed? Is there a cheaper way to buy one used Dunlop runflat with few miles?

U R SOL. My vote is to leave it as is and roll the dice. Next option, EBAY. Good luck.

If the tires are uni-directional then to switch them from right to left you would have to swap the tires. Thus if the nail is on the outside of the left rear tire - it would move to the inside of the right rear tire.

If you do this you run the risk of the tire leaking after you make the swap and you lost the money spent getting the tires swapped and wheels re-balanced in the first place.

Paint the nail with black sharpie marker before returning the car. Nobody will ever notice.

Common sense and safety for You, or who ever ride in your car (or next owner) is to change the runflat. Safety should be first concern. Not $$$. Being responsible and..accountable should drive the behavior. If you can afford the car you can afford the cost that should go with it.

I had similar problem with one tyre and drove long long way as it was night and week end and no way to find a replacement. Guess what. alhough idrive did not mention pressure drop, the tyre was significantly hotter than the others, probably as sidewalls started to rub badly. In short, even RFT can blow up. just harder and takes longer to get there.

Would you drive with your kids in a car like this? Would you mind driving among traffic made of people taking that risk?

From what you describe - I had a nail in a similar location in a run flat. I found a tire shop who agreed to plug it with the understanding that it might not hold. Mine held fine without a problem for 15k (still going strong). The good thing about the run flats is that its not going to result in a blow out, just a pressure loss (and of course the possibility of having to replace the tire).

The vehicle is safe. If the tire leaks, it will happen slowly and the TPM system will inform me. Even still, it's a runflat and I would consider the safety risk a non-issue. It's not like there's a risk of a sudden blowout.

I would drive with my kids in the car, and I don't consider this a question of ethics: I do want to repair it, I just don't want to waste money by replacing an otherwise perfectly good tire if I can avoid it.

Another reason BMW should deep six the freaking run flats!!!!!! Expensive and really can't be repaired. Running tires with different tread wear is just a crappy decision. Everybody bitch to BMW.
