Default N62 timing chain tensioner. Common fault?

The RH timing chain tensioner appears not to be working when compressed, i.e. when fitted. When I mostly-remove it, it seems nice and springy, just not when it's fitted in and half-compressed.

This is the one that looks like it's impossible to remove without raising the engine significantly (more than can be done with a gearbox & propshaft attached I suspect).

I think being low down has caused it to collect carbon and what not.

Anybody else come across this? I think this (chain slap) is the source of the ticking noise I heard.
