rock it with the cover off. i yanked out my hood insulation as well as the cover (supposedly a sound deadener as well as for looks). looks okay but not for everyone i guess.

To all who posted, the pics look great!!! 
What kind of paint was used and what prep do you have to do before painting. My engine cover is dirty!!! I tried cleaning when I replaced the sparkplugs, but they did not come out as clean as I hoped. Did you remove the cover to paint?

I used VHT engine enamel. Primed it first with a flat grey. I washed with dawn before I painted it, lol. Like Vapiano any high temp spray paint should work.

My Ride: 2008 535i LCI with sports/premium package, Sports trans with paddle shifters, CF emblems, JB4 Software, Dinan Exhaust, Navigation, M5Tech body kit, Carbon wrap interrior trim and CIC Controller.
Go back and read the second post, there are some tips in there that you may want to consider. Otherwise, you can simply go to your local store and purchase a cheap rattle can of paint and then deal with the fisheyes looking up at you when you open your hood and there is a good chance of the paint peeling off in spots or completely due to an adhesion problem. The material used in the cover is PP and when you paint it there are very clear steps needed to ensure adhesion. Again, you can go take a can of rustolium, but if you are serious about it and want it done correctly then you need to do some special prepping things first.

My Ride: 2005 545 6MT
Mine has been painted for almost three years now and only had to touch it up once (cracked knee on tool box reaction was to kick something). All I did was clean it with purple power, let it dry completely, mask, prime, and paint. I used high heat engine primer/paint from autozone. Did a couple of coats of primer and 4 or 5 coats of semi gloss engine paint. If it were something going to a show, I would have sanded, primed, paint, clear, and wet sand/buff. For a daily driver and something I see not so often, I like the way it looks now.
