Default N62 Engine Covers - To paint or not to paint?

I can't take the color of the engine covers anymore. Has anyone painted them? I am interested in seeing painted covers or carbon options. What about Plastidip?

Thanks.

I've seen them on here just can't remember who it was. I thought it looked kinda nice especially when there are other compliments in the engine area. If you decide to go for it, there are are few things you will need to do.

Cleaning, very important for obvious reasons. I would start with a good engine degreaser like purple power and clean it well. After its dried, and before scuffing, use pre-cleaner which you can get at NAPA store that sells auto paint. You won't need much and often they will sell you a pint. If not locate a auto paint store and they can do the same.

Adhesion, ask for a spray can of adhesion promoter. This is important so that the paint is not getting lazy later and peeling off.

And of course, you may always find a rattle can at one of the stores as well. If you do, just go for a good one and one with a good spray tip. This will make a difference.
Color, decide on what color you want. If you don't have a spraying system, you can purchase a portable kit which is not too bad for something like this. I've seen them at NAPA and various auto paint stores. Then just get the paint color you want mixed and a little reducer to thin it. I would just go with a basic single stage enamel. If you do a dual stage/base you will need to finish it with a clear coat.

I know that the '45 has a carbon fiber engine cover. For the '50 I will eventually get this done since I think it will compliment my sapphire black really well.

I have mine painted semi gloss black. I can post some pics when the weather clears up a bit. It's a world of difference over the ugly grey color.

Ok, had a break in the rain. Sorry in advanced that the engine is covered in pollen and dust, I just moved and haven't had a chance to get her cleaned.

Great ideas all and thank you. Based on this, I am going to paint it; I love the black and white cover. Will this fit the '04 545i?

I decided to paint it flat black, I left the lower covers unpainted for now. I kinda like the contrast. I am going to see if the 2008 550i upper engine cover fits as well. I have a few ideas for the paint scheme.
