Yes the whole pump problem and BMW approach of fixing upon failure sucks and is well known.

But my question is if BMW has solved the problem or will see failure again?

I just got the HPFP Recall done and the first step in that process is for the ECU(?) software to be updated. Then they run some tests to determine if your HPFP and/or injectors need to be replaced. My tests came back "good" and no further action was required for my car. I've had my car for 3.25 years and 40,000 miles and have never had any HPFP issue. Just wanted to add this "data point to the discussion.

I wonder what tests the dealer runs to determine no replacement needed?

They did this to my 535 in November and the pump failed in January. It proves that they can't really test the pump and that they would rather replace it when it fails. You would think that for a that costs over $50,000 you would better service! BMW seems to be taking the cheap way out.

I don't know specifically what tests they ran on my car...or your car...so I wouldn't say that they did the same thing to your car back in November, that they did to my car last week. I know they update/change that software pretty often...so maybe they have it fixed...all I know is that my car has been rock solid since new...maybe it will stay that way.

I just wish we had more information on the new fuel pump and if it together with the software fixes the problem?

I took my 2008 535xi in for service today and was told I needed the software reprogram (it showed up as a recall). When I asked about the fuel pump they told me that I didn't need a new one and the warranty on the pump has been extended to 10 years.

That is exactly what happened to me in November and the pump just failed. I have a 2008 535 with 30,000 miles on it.
