N54 intake port crud
My radiator repair has become a fun saga of "while I'm at it".
First radiator that was shipped was wrong, and the replacment came just before we jetted off to Maui for our annual whale watching and beach trip. Now I'm back at it.
I found oil leaks where the oil cooler lines attach to the oil filter assembly, so I ordered them, the oil cooler adapter profile gasket and the oil filter to head profile gasket. Removing the oil filter adapter, of course, requires removal of the intake manifold due to the rear bolt being under the manifold. On removal of the manifold, I've found pretty serious crud in the intake ports. Since I'm in this far, I'd be nuts not to clean the ports.
I've seen you can buy a DIY walnut blasting kit but I don't have the funds right now. I've also seen it can be done with carb cleaner and scraping. Ugh.
I did manage to get a nice shot of a humpback breach off Lanai though:

This is the down side of a direct injection engine. It is considered regular maintenance. I have heard of people cleaning them with solvent and digging and scraping and using wire brushes. The quickest and easiest is the walnut blasting. Just make sure how ever you do it, make sure the valves are closed on the cylinder you are working on and cover up all the rest so that nothing gets into the cylinders.

If by 'regular maintenance' you mean it should have been done before 190,000km...
The car is apart now. I guess I'll just do it with solvent and scraping. I can feel my back screaming at me already.
