Me: "5 DAYS! Fine, but for that length of time a 3-series loaner won't do, it'll have to be a 5 or same size."

Comparable size... haha I would rather have a 3er than a Kia or Hyundai thats "comparable in size?"

Ya dealers take forever for the smallest things... they have to test... re-test... let it sit... work on other cars and then get back to yours...

Took a little while for dealer to line up a suitable replacement car and for me to line up a slot in my diary to call into the dealer; going in on Monday a.m. first thing to show faults to senior tech and collect a loaner.

Thankfully no Kia etc it will be a rental 5.

For anyone who is still with me so far, dropped car off this a.m., picked up 520D M Sport manual LCI, less than 1000 miles on it, full leather & 172s

Astonished at the ride quality on the 19" 172s, as good as if not a bit better than the 17" std SE wheels on my.

Love the Msport steering wheel and even on normal corners and roundabouts the car turns in like a 3 series, it is so nimble.

The diesel 4 is very intrusive at idle (much worse than a colleagues 163bhp 520d) and much worse than the M47R I sat behind for 3 1/2 years until recently (and that didn't even have the balancer shafts that the BMW version does).

Ludicrous amounts of torque though and smooths out quite a bit off idle.

Anyway, enough of the 520d road test, I'll update re: the progress on mine and the PUMA case as soon as I hear anything.

and then 5 days passed.......

call from the dealer today, 6 new injectors were ordered today for my car, expected to arrive on Monday, I should have the car back on Monday evening

Although the dealer confirmed the problems did exist they couldn't get the car to log any fault codes during the 5 days they had it but they are sure it is an injector problem based on their experience and my own experience with the car hence the change of the lot, even the 2 'new' ones.

I'll post an update on Monday night after I've got the car back.

So, mostly good news....

Collected the car on Monday late afternoon (dealer offered to bring car to me but I was away from the office).

Car was absolutely spotless inside & out, looked and smelt as though it had been waxed, being jet black it looked great.

It was very smooth indeed after the 520D LCI.

So far the idling issues haven't reappeared but the vibration is still there at around 1K rpm although not as bad as before.

I was beginning to think I was being over-sensitive to the vibration but as we were trickling along in stop-start traffic in roadworks a colleague in the car noticed the vibration and mentioned it without any prompting from me.

It is perhaps more obvious now that the rest of the time the car is nicely smooth.

I'm not sure how to describe it properly but that sort of 'gritty' feel that the engine had at all revs has gone as well.

As the car has just had 6 brand new injectors (8 now in total since new last September) I'm curious as to whether the vibration at 1K rpm is a 'feature' of the LCI auto transmission.

It took about a week for the idling issues to re-surface after the last injector change in December so I'll obviously keep an eye on it and update the post in a week or two.

If any of the injectors go off again I expect that the dealer will then have to replace the fuel pump (assuming the pump is somehow knackering the injectors?).

I guess this post seals my decision NOT to buy a N53 5 Series. Way too unreliable if you are private buying it and wanting to keep it for more than the legal warranty...

So, in the option list, remains the new Volvo V70 and the Mercedes C Class SW, which I'll be testing tomorrow with the C200 Kompressor engine and the auto box...
LOL ! Very funny

And the sorry tale continues:

8th April, car was picked up for second recall for fuelling issues.

All the symptoms except the bad misfire had gradually reappeared by then but I hadn't booked it in as I'd heard a recall was pending.
No other changes made whilst they had the car as far as I know but the car was much smoother when I got it back.

The cheeping noise started again about a week ago and the vibration at approx 1000rpm came back as well.

Last night had intermittent loss of power.

This morning was misfiring as if on 5 cylinders again and this time the engine management light came on (nothing on I-Drive).

Limped to dealer (only approx 3 miles away).

Dealer called this afternoon, injector No 3 has failed (again, #3 was the first to fail last year).

Part is on order, should be sorted tomorrow and there is yet another part number for the injectors so will be different from those fitted in January (which were themselves supposed to have different part numbers to the 2 injectors fitted in 2007).

Also advised that if happens again don't try to get the car to a dealer, get it recovered.

Told dealer I wanted all 6 injectors changing and queried if pump or something else was killing the injectors.

Dealer now waiting on response from BMW as to whether will change 6 injectors.

I'll be contacting the contract hire lease company this week to inform them that we consider the car isn't fit for purpose and should be replaced.

I'm curious... How many miles before you started seeing these injector failures? So far my 535i with HPI direct inject is running fine. Only 2K miles tho. I know there was an issue with a batch of High Pressure Fuel Pumps in early 2007 production 5 series. I see there are others who have experienced injector problems, but until I started looking through the forums, I was unaware there were injector problems too.

I hope you get it sorted out, and I'm hopeful mine was built with the newer parts.
