No, they are different gaskets.
Leak from valve cover gasket results in oil seeping out of the engine (on the top). This is a relatively easy job to replace valve cover gasket.
Leak from head gasket, on the other hand, results in coolant leaking in to the engine. You won't see any visual signs outside except the white smoke from the exhaust. This can get expensive job to replace head gasket.

Crap...Looking at my engine from before it seems I need both gaskets since I also notice oil seeping from the top.

- Oil related leaks - try tightening the valve cover and other bolts first.

Head gasket is between the valve train/camshafts and the cylinders/pistons. Basically the top third of the motor. It's a big job to replace the gasket and an even bigger job if the head is warped as it will require machining to make it level and true again.
