A mystery noise
#1
I am driving at around 30 mph and I suddely hear a bang like a rock hitting the winshield. I inspected the car and there were no chips in the paint or winshield. This has happened three times in the last month. I had BMW check the undercarrage to see if something was kicked up from the road. Everthing was OK.
Has anyone experienced these noises? PS. happy to say no bullet holes either.

Check the hindge on your hood. push on the top of where the hindge is and see if it creeks and pops.

Happened to me a couple of times too, but not as frequently (three months apart), so I always assumed it WAS a rock!

Oil Canning
A moderate deformation or buckling of sheet material, particularly common with flat sheet metal surfaces. Typically caused by uneven stresses at the fastening points. This terminology also refers to the popping sound made when pressure is applied to the deformed sheet forcing the deformation in the opposite direction.
If a weld joint gave way say on the underside frame of the hood of your car, and it popped back into place as you were driving it would make a huge bang sound but you would not notice anything different.
The top of my Sears Kenmore washing machine has such a condition. If i step on it to get up to a shelf i push it in but its not noticable. The next person to come along and open the washer cover...BANG as it pops back.
I would check your hood to see if this could be the area where this is happening.
Just a thought.
