I have just purchased an 04 E60 350d and in the glove box there is a cable that looks like it should be used for connecting an MP3 player. It has a headphone plug on the end and the cable (about 0.75m) comes though the glove box light fitting.

However I can't get it to do anything. There is no option in iDrive to select it. My car has the standard stereo (i.e. not Logic 7, no Nav) and has a BMW cd changer.

Any ideas gratefully received.

Sounds like the Aux In cable for connecting MP3 or iPod. When you look in iDrive, what do you see listed? You should see FM, AM, CD and AUX... If no Aux, check with the person/dealer you bought the car from. If the cable is there, you should have the Aux Input.

Edit: Doh, you already said there is nothing in iDrive. Can you see the CD changer in the glove box?

I can see the CD changer at the back of the glove box. Maybe i need a software update for the iDrive

It looks like U already kitted for the AUX input. try and remove the CD Shuttle, then connect your iPod/MP3 on the AUX cable, and choose the CD option. It should recognise the Mp3 player/iPod as CD. you may be able to change songs up and down, but wont be able to see full details.

Does your iDrive have a 4th option called AUX? If yes then turn to that and plug your ipod into the socket. This looks like a DIY install to me done by the previous owner.
