The new iDrive is HDD. Or, so I have read. That means you can download the G maps. How else would you do that without HDD? Use flash media via USB? That means a stick feeding the info; not unlike still using a DVD.

HHD is really the way to go. No more DVD based nav (except to update), and no more iPod or USB device really needed. Pop everything onto the internal drive.

I'm afraid such an upgrade for older cars is only a pipe dream.
I know the Euro cars are currently using the Google maps feature, but they also have the Connected Drive software and hardware over there making all this possble. I do not believe their 2008's are hard drive based, but I could be wrong.

For a 2009 to 2008 retrofit I would imagine it would involve a swap of the nav unit/computer along with the other hardware invovling the idrive, not to mention reprogramming it with the new software. I am not saying will be cheap, but if there was a chance at a retrofit, there would be a better chance with the 2008 than previous years, since the componets and fitment is practically the same.

The beauty of the iDrive software os that it is Java based making very easily upgradable. The hardware is another issue. Where there is a will there is a way.

I am going to keep my finfgers crossed. My problem is that I am very impatient and will not want to wait 4 or 6 months before the SA's or Garry of Newport can tell if this is possible.

My bet with a friend still on and I have a feeling I may loose (or maybe not if 550i still MY 2009).
I bet with him that 555i will be the last E60 MY (in 2010) cause BMW will have to battle with new A6 and E-class in that year.
But that bet was before gas hits $4.5/gallon for premium
The new issue of Roundel talks about the 555 arriving in the F10. The 2009's will not get engine upgrades.
