I have found that inflating low-profile tires up to 36/38 was the threshold for my comfort and handling limit. Above this pressure, my kidneys will shake itself to pieces. Now, with the RFT's I would imagine that threshold pressure should be a lot lower.

I am a much matured driver now and my tolerance for harshness has sunken to a new low. Therefore, I'd prefer 32/36 for my car from now on.

That's pretty much right on with my door jamb for light loads.

Interesting comments. I don't see why BMW will want to raise the pressure of the tires. as it is my rears are wearing a bit faster in the middle and I have 34/35 to control a bit the understeering (that was mentioned by an auto cross guy in the E46 fanatics forum). So If increase the rear to anywhere to 40psi i think the middle of the tire will be bold by the end of the month ..weird. .

Precisely, over inflating them will do as much damage and underinflating. I think the bottom line is that the 18" Run Flats are very sensitive to tire pressure. They need to be just right and then checked every month.

So what do you all think the most likely answer is?:

-The MY05 18" runflat tires are somehow different than MY04.

-BMW just dumbed the recs down.

or

-They purposely raised the recommended pressures to address some issue.

All I can say, firewired, is that I have fared well with 32/35 and will stay there until I get some wear indicators to do otherwise.

Just so I don't feel left out here's my UK 530d pressure tab:

Attachment 3518

For the 124 18" (245/40 & 275/35) this is 35/36 to 39/43.5psi

Anyone else got a 530d with different recommendations? (MY05?)

colejl / all:

My UK pressure tab/chart is the same as yours colejl.

Just ordered a digital pressure guage (~?10) btw as a little concerned after reading this thread + others on e60.net.... and my old 2001 Audi 3.0S didn't feel like there were side-wind gusts at motorway speeds as my 530d does even when the weather's calm.

A number of owners have commented on the "wander factor" or tramlining that is felt with the run flats. IMO, the more road feel you have, the more these tendencies will be noticed. I do not see it as bad. The car is telling you what the road feels like. This might be more pronounced with low tire pressure. If it really bothers you, trade for a Lincoln and you will never feel the road again. I know, my wife has one. She likes it that way.

Hmmm, that's the price you pay for a real sensitive set-up. The active steering may contribute but the wide run-flats are probably to blame
