In the past 2 days, I noticed that my transmission is acting up, my shifts into 6th gear are really rough. Plus, as I was driving slow, (This is my best attempt at describing it) the car sort of lost power for a half second, then there was a clunk, and then the car lost power for a split second again, and then clunked again (this 2-stage process repeated itself about ten times). It is just a little clunk, and when the car "looses" power, it is like you are pressing the brake ever so slightly, for just a little bit.
Is this covered under warranty, and if it is could I get a new transmission?

BTW, I tried the 25 second trick.

Thank you

Get it to a dealer this week so its at least documented with them that there is issues incase your warranty is coming up. You don't want to a bill for a new tranny if it goes out six months down the road.

Does it do it all the time so the dealer can test drive it and feel the problem?? If it doesn't do it all the time the dealer may just try some other fixes. Replacing the tranny will be the last thing on there list unless everything they find is pointing to a new tranny. Trannys clunking or shifting ruff is never good thing and usually at some point in the not so distance future its going to fail.

It's the old issue of trannie slam. There are many threads on the topic.

So is this normal? Because it just started a few days ago.

No, it is not, but BMW has had this transmission issue with a certain percentage of their vehicles for more than 15 years. My 93 740i had transmission slam. It is is disconcerting, but apparently is not really indicative of transmission damage. I drove it that way for more than 30,000 miles. Maybe you should have your dealer check it out anyway, however, just to make sure all is OK.

What about a software upgrade?

That will be one of there first things they try.

This is why its important to get it to the dealer so there is a running record of tranny problems. I'd also ask if they get the problem to subside for now are they going to stand behind it six months from now if your tranny goes out and your out of warranty.

Yea, I am going to ask for a sofware upgrade today. How often does BMW actually update their software?
