Hello all. New to the BMW scene just coming out of an Audi S4. I went from wanting a 06 M5, to having a deposit on a 08 550i, to buying a 08 535i today from Illinois. It should arrive next week just in time for Christmas.
After A LOT of internal debate (and I mean A LOT) and discussions with my buddy over at GMP Performance I finally decided on the 535i over the other 2 options for numerous reasons. These are my reasons and opinions whether right or wrong.
First and foremost cost of ownership. The 535i was the least stupid of the BMWs I was looking into. The M5 would have been about the same cost to purchase, but after taking into account the necessary ext. warranty plan (most were in the $4-$5k range), poor gas mileage, and well after I realized I was worried about all that shit I came to the conclusion that I'm not ready for a M5. That and I was looking at M5s from 2006.
The 550i I made a deposit on I stopped yesterday morning. The color was not right, and again it came down to the cost difference vs real performance differences. The 535i is more fuel efficient and with a simple tune can run with and potentially outrun a 550i. I'm sure I'll miss the growl of a V8 like I had in my S4 and would have in the M5 or 550i, but I'm more excited about being in a turbo car for the first time that has some strong potential and gives me the ability to mod, etc.
The 535i I bought is black on black with all the options I wanted: Navigation, Premium Package, Sports Package, Cold Weather package, etc with a CLEAN carfax and service history. It also has 15k less miles than the M5 and 550i models I looked at, so I gain another 10k of warranty which is about a year of driving for me.
Onto some pics (more to come when it arrives next week)
Immediate mods I'm considering (and open to any good input) are:
RPI Scoop - jury still out on this one for me
BMG Dual Cone Intake
Matte Black Kidneys (and carbon wrapping the OEM ones)
Tint
Black out 535i emblems, CF black/white emblems, wheel caps, and steering wheel emblem
Possible CF Wrap on interior trim
Exhaust
Post Warranty I might look into a JB3/JB4 or other tune along with downpipes and other go fast goodies.
Thanks,
SkiWalk3r

Nice. Looks like you made a good decision based on your own research and comfort level....and your now in a bmw! Win-win, and welcome to the forums.
Btw, I like how you already have your mod list ready
