how do I get em done black?
Short instructions:
1. Used a wooden block and a hammer to remove the tips.
2. Use some sand paper to matte the tips and then use some finer sand paper to smooth out the surface. It does not have to be super-smooth - just so that the surface does not look rough and unprofessional.
3. Use heat-resistant paint (in U.S. Rustoleum products are considered to be good, if you want, ask member Anzafin for a brand you can pick up in Europe - btw Anzafin has a couple of VERY GOOD DIY threads). When you're spraying the paint, make sure that you keep the spray bottle about 30-50cm away from the tips so as to avoid running paint etc.
4. "Bake" the tips. Most people actually forgo this step and just re-install the tips and let the car run for about 30-40 mins. However, since you're in a colder climate, I recommend baking the paint, as per instructions (all temp-resistant paints will normally have instructions on how to bake). I did not bake mine and they came out just fine, but I did dry them in direct sunlight in July NY sun (about 100 degrees Fahrenheit) for 3 hours and then ran the car for about 1 hour after I re-installed the tips back on.
5. Put the tips back on. You will need a towel or some sort of fabric that you can use to wrap around the tips when you're putting them back on. Some people have told me you can gently knock them in with a hammer or smth, but I simply pushed mine in with my hands and they went it just fine. You have to make sure they "click" into place.
All in all its a very simple DIY and takes about 20 minutes (not counting the baking) and maybe 20 bucks in materials
For the complete list of instructions, DIYs and pics, search Anzafin's, PraiseTheLowered's, AlpineWhiteGirl's and others' topics - there are many of them on this forum and all are excellent.
As a bonus, you can use the same exact paint and painting process on your kidney grilles (which are kind of a bitch to remove without breaking any tabs, btw
)
