Hi Folks,
well after posting the pics of my accident and after totalling my second e60. I had some serious thinking to do. I have had the old 5 series the one before the e39, then an e39 and two e60s. Problem is this time i got a real fright lost faith in the car although i knew it wasnt the car but my driving.

I could only think of one option a quattro Audi. It was going to be an a6 allroad or an a8 with all the toys.

So which one did i buy?

Well they both are good cars. They both hold the road like glue.

Heres what swung it for me: My kids thought the e60 was much nicer looking and i have to agree. But the audis have 4 wheel drive and are safer. Then my wife said the e60 had saved me twice and she liked the bmw better.

So is it goodbye from me.

Nah, bought another 535d. just couldnt say goodbye to the car and to you lot!!!! And i love it.

Going to start a new post which might interest you all on warranty work.

cheers

Fraseman

wifey has a 1999 a8 4.2 quattro. other than a four thousand dollar transmission overhaul at 90k its been a very solid car. i think the 4.2 engine is bombproof, it has 130k on it now. this experience with zf auto transmissions is why i bought my 545i with a 6 spd manual. i will never ever ever own an automatic again. my very first car broke its auto tranny twice, however it was a 1981 monte carlo, ha ha....;least reliable heap i've ever owned.

when the a8 gets to 200k she'll get a new car....with a manual trans of course. perhaps i'll give her my 545, and i can get an S5, who knows.

oil thread fodder: the audi has only been filled with mobil 15-50 synthetic with 10k intervals. no oil consumption, no engine problems, still silky smooth. i've never put 0 or 5wt oil in that car.

My sisters A4 2.8 quattro has been a relatively good car except the coolant resevior cracked and leaked out and she ran the car with minimal coolant for a few days. At 90k miles the power steering started to go, had to get it fixed, most likely do to the extra strain of the AWD. The tranny is in ok condition, downshifting is pretty rough in her car now at 105k miles. Then the real kicker is Audi's have timing belts, not chains. So at 90-100k miles they have to be replaced, that's $2500 to be factored into the cost of ownership. Long story short Audi's aren't as mechanically reliable as a BMW. As for safety I don't know that Audi's are significantly safer, maybe I'm wrong on that.
