I picked up my new 535d on Thursday. Great car. Apart from the power steering shutting down just as I was pulling out into a busy stream of traffic. Queue wrestling with the wheel while a large truck is bearing down on me... Happened a couple more times before I could get the car back to the dealer.

A brief search on the web seems to suggest that other people have had this issue, but I couldn't find anything definitive as to the cause. Does anyone have any ideas so I can point the dealer in the right direction? No fault lights on the dash and power steering fluid level seems to be OK. And of course the dealer took it for a test drive and the fault didn't happen.

Unless the dealer can fix pronto I'm tempted to reject the car: I've owned some clunkers in my time but never anything that I've felt very unsafe in...

Thanks,

BC

Could part of the fault be your handle name and avatar?

Hummm since I guess you're in UK... I guess you consider them lucky...

But as for your car have you had the SZL module repalce? Think a lot of 2005 E60s had steering faults related to that module...

The LCI has a electronically powered steering wheel that only switched on when really used, maybe the software is malfunctioning?

Think Id better get down the the gym as Im picking mine up on the 8th and its an April 07 build...

There's a good answer from a BMW Master Technician here on Pistonheads. Perhaps there's a faulty batch of optical sensors the plant are still using....

Looks like "lucky"BlackCat and EvilCat are one and the same person with one and the same problem.

Yup I thought the (is it SZL??) sensor was an "old" issue. Actually my Mar 06 build had its sensor replaced a couple of weeks ago as part of the recall when I'd booked in for some other warranty work.

Rumbled! Normally I don't approve of cross posting across forums, but thought it worth a punt, particularly as this place has a wider geographical cross section. I too thought that the SZL was an old issue... and in any case doesn't it cause the dash to light up like a Christmas tree? The worrying thing about my car was that is showed no faults at all, just an inability to go round corners.

I will report back once I've spoken with the service manager tomorrow. If it's a known/obvious fix then fine, and hopefully I'll have the car back pronto. If it seems more involved then I'll be tempted to reject the car rather than get into a lengthy diagnosis process.
