You have to call the dealer (although you may have to go in) and they can order a key with your VIN... they will need your reg too. You can get the plastic key temporarily for like $50 but I would say you are kind of screwed and should just get the real deal...
Yeah i would just get the real deal from the dealer. They come with three sets of keys i believe two No 1 a valet key and the extra in your glovebox. The no 1's are prob gonna run you about $250 and $180 or so for the valet key

Even if you can get a key cut, there is a procedure to relearn your new keys / remotes. Unless you have the procedure, the relearn procedure is needed to "forget" any old keys (including the missing key), which means a trip to the dealer.

I have to agree that you have to go to the stealership for the replacement.

Assuming you have only one key (and it's now gone), you really should, at the very least, get it deactivated by the dealer. If someone "stole" your key, it's possible that they'll return and steal the car!
If you have a second key and are willing to get by with just that one, then you're fine. If you end up getting another one from a secondary (used) source, yes, someone will have to program it and it's likely going to be a BMW dealer...
