As it says in the title

Pulled in to the dealer and he topped it up without charging.
Got the impression that it went through oil a bit quicker during the first stages of life/run-in period of the engine.

I have 11k on my 05 525i and have not had to add any oil other than an oil change I had about 9k. Have you checked for any leaks under the car and engine. This is not the norm to add that much oil so early in the car's life.
I agree with the suggestion to get you car back to the dealer ASAP. Good luck and please post an answer to your problem if one is found.

I'm wondering if you broke it in by the book--varying speeds, etc.-- or with cruise on at a constant speed? I didn't have to add any oil betwen changes on BMWs oil change schedule.

My '05 530i has about 8500 miles and I received a low oil level warning. Stopped by the dealer and had him top it off (free in the USA). Still have about 7000 miles beofre the first oil service. Other than that, no other oil issues.
