08 535XI 77,000mi, Went to my local shop for a loud vibration (suspecting motor mounts). Shop calls me says I need struts, control arms, ball joints and an axle for front right side. Oh and a new battery! I shell out $2500. I get my car back but the vibration is still there, the mechanic pretty much tells me he has no idea what it could be and that my motor mounts are in tact. I realized my local shop is not the place it once was since the owner retired and left it to his kids. The next week i had the famous trio of lights come on (ABS,DSC and 4X4). I went to a BMW Indy shop I found on a Beamer forum and I was told the transfer case was bad as well as 2 motor mounts. I feel sick. Before this problem my turbo went and then my water pump went (both covered under CPO).
My first BMW x5 transmission went but was covered under CPO but then the engine went bad. I love BMW's but I can't afford a car that's in need of constant major repairs!

first of all pull the codes and see what the problem is first. and report back
you can have any shop or even a pep boys type chain stores can do that for u. and buy a fault reader for yourself too.
you can always buy a used transfer case and have some put it in

The codes say it's the transfer case. The mechanic thinks it may just be the actuator and that would be great as it's less than half the cost of a transfer case. He will let me know tomorrow. In the mean time I'll search the web for a used one. thanks!

at about 60k-80k miles all BMWs start to fall apart and get usually fixed when they hit 100k or over. thats why i learned to either never keep one without a good warranty past 60k miles or buy one with either VERY low mileage or one with over 100k miles.
once you fix all the problems, which are mostly common BMW ones and it will run just fine for another 100k miles

Mechanic found nothing wrong in the transfer case. Thinks that the loose axle (MAY) have tripped the ABS,DCS and 4x4 as well as disrupted the 4x4. He changed the oil in the transfer case and he's putting it back together then taking for a test drive. If he gets no error codes I may have dodged an expensive bullet! On the lift the 4x4 engaged with no problem.
