Keep a few quarts of oil in your trunk and check the oil level weekly at cold start up i regularly add oil and coolant once a week.

Either way im looking at a $5k job for the secondary air injection, engine needs to be dropped and my mechanic will replace valve seals, coolant transfer feed and gaskets.
I have a 2004 545 and it has no distick that I can find - where are you checking

thx

Back right of engine if you are standing in front with the hood up.

Owner's manual is here: https://5series.net/info/2004_5_Series_Manual_US.pdf

It's red. You definitely have a dipstick, only newer engines on the E60 don't.

The idle smoke is cause by a vacuum leak somewhere which prevents the internal pressure (negative pressure for bmw and vw but most cars have positive pressure) from staying negative. The normally negative pressure keeps those stupid little flaps closed preventing oil from splashing in them. The reason why its so random is sometimes they just stay closed anyways and other times they will open allowing oil in which is why it only does it at idle. When at driving speeds your creating enough negative pressure to overpower your vacuum leak. I found my leak in my oil pan. Tiny little pin hole from a rock hitting the drain plug and cracking the weld ever so slightly and since I replace that no more idle smoke. YMMV but I wouldn't go to full freak out mode and rebuild the engine. Just find your vacuum leak and fix.
Maybe so, but new valve stem seals fixed the smoking after idle issue on my '04 and oil consumption was vastly reduced. The old seals were rock hard like most other BMW seals of age. Don't fool yourself, it's an issue.

It cost the warranty company 5k for the dealer to replace the valve seals. Vehicle runs like brand new now! G/L with your motor!

I have owned a 2004 745i and now i own a 2005 545i. The 745i had 107,000 mile when i purchased it . The 545 had 99K.....

I found a semi fix for this engine. I tried this on my 545i with my last oil change by using 10-60
(heavy i know but the valve stem seals are having that problem) right now because it is spring, i will decrease the weight in winter. I used what is call ATP AT-205 RE-Seal Stop Leak. It worked !!!!! i have had it in my 05 545 for 1000 mile and the smoke it literally none existent.. ...

Well i will keep you updated on any changes. so far so good .. FYI they use 10-60 in M3 and M5 .. can also be used in naturally aspirated BMW.

To confirm, you put the AT-205 RE-Seal Stop Leak in w/ your oil? How many bottles did you add?

Yes put it in the oil if that is where you need the leak to be stopped. One bottle is enough

No sound from what you are describing? Just smoke.
they say it should make a sound because PCVs have a bead in them that function as valves. my gf's 05' F150 PCV was a rubber check valves and you could barely hear it. i blew air into it by mouth and i think it loosened it up and we never noticed a sound after that. I'm still learning BMW, ive only had one since Thursday this week

there is a huge risk of damaging the oil pump using high viscosity oils, unless you live on the sun. as long as the seal-stop isnt considered a dispersant/contaminate it should be ok to use. i might want to try it.

this video eventually goes in depth to explain why high viscosity oils shouldn't be used
