My Ride: 2004 545i Sport, Titanium Silver Exterior, Black Leather, Anthracite Trim, Steptronic, Xenon, Sport and Cold Weather Packages, 19" M5 Style 166 Wheels, M Aero Kit, 50% Llumar Tint and Michelin Pilot Sport All Season Tires.
Every so often when I unlock my doors my car makes a weird cranking/buzz/clicking noise. It last only a few seconds but sounds not so good. Any clue as to what this is or has anyone else had this issue? I think it might have happened when I lock the car to but I can't recall for sure. It seems like it is coming from somewhere in front of the car or even by the driver side front tire. I know if I take it in to BMW it surely won't happen so maybe if someone tells me what it could be that would make it easy for me to explain to them.

Does it sound like a rapid clicking, sort of like a machine gun under the hood for about half a second when you unlock the car remotely? If so, I had this on my 2005 545i and it was fixed by the CIP 18.01 upgrade in Aug 2005.

My Ride: Alpine white 2004 545, cold weather package, premium sound, sport package.
Mine does it to. I dont really notice it when locking/unlocking my car. It happens every now and then. It doesnt really bother me. I just hate it when I'm waxin clean or even havin a frikken cig especialyy during the nite, that noise just freaks the heck outta me. The buzzy/whirry sound just 
's me out. lil creepy for me
I read some Bimmer related stuff and I think the buzzy-whirry sound is the car is doing a self diagnostic check. So I guess thats it moans frequently.

My Ride: '04 545iS 6 spd, bought new via eBay, 11/05; Blk/Gry, Cold, L7, PDC, BMW Rear seatcover for pets.
First "Bumwa" was a new 1971 2002. High performance 5s since 1987. Beamer motorcycles too, currently on an 07 BMW K1200 GT; also a Moto Guzzi 1000 SP III.
Things that go "bump" in the night....Have you ever sat there for a few minutes, vehwy vehwy quiet, after you've shut the car off, and listened to all the solenoids, switches, and other gadgets that keep on switching after sutdown? It's kinda like star gazing from a dark, rural location--you'll notice things that you never knew were there. 
When they reprogram things at the dealer, they let it sit for 20 minutes before attempting anything.
