The IVM is the Integreated Voltage Supply Module. It is the power point for everything in the engine compartment. It is basically a box with fuses and relays in it. One of them is the starter relay.
CAS (Car Access System) sends the start signal to the IVM starter relay which then enables the starter.

Hey folks. I'm having the same exact problem on my 08 550i. Glad to see this post. Thanks. I'll try the IVM. Anybody have a little video about how to find it and replace it? I saw a youtube video for a 650 and it looks really tight and hard to get to even after removing the passenger airbox? Anybody have any insight, pictures or video??
