Sorry if Im being a bit daft but can someone please explain to me what this is all about..........How is it possible to have a MY 2006, when we're not even in that year yet!!

Okay I understand it's something to do with model versions, but does it refer primarily to the Engines ? Or is it other revisions too.

Also, My car (not yet got it........still waiting) was manufactured in February 2005, it is a 525d Auto, and is a UK Car, so does this make it a MY2005 or a MY 2006...........Or am I missing a trick.

Please Help.
Thanks

In the states, we normally get new model year cars in about August. These cars are a bit early as you can tell. It's not normal, but not exactly strange either, there are other manufacturers who have released early 2006 cars in the US.

I have no idea how this applies to other countries in the case of the 5 Series.

Yours is more than likely an '05. One way to tell (at least in US) is the 8th from last position in your VIN.

Model year changeover is typically after the August holiday period. There are times when the new model year starts earlier (like the new 3)--the manufacturers have quite a bit of flexibility.

From the BMWUSA website (under Credits and Copyrights) the following statement can be found;

"BMW will, subject to legal requirements, determine the Model Year designation of its vehicles. The Model Year designation on any particular model may be longer or shorter than twelve months."

Forget about the States, Gudge. New Model Year production starts from September 1 in Munich. Your car is MY2005 but I do not understand what it takes them so long to deliver it

Guys, its not really that big a deal. Whereas MYs traditionally start with with production in September of the previous year, in this case BMWNA have got the new R6 engines certified by DOT as MY06s so that they do not have to go through it again. It saves them time and money. We do have the cheapest BMWs in the world in the US as a result of BMWNAs antics.

Don't worry, he will log on soon and chew my ass off for that post. He is right though, this is just a BMWNA thang. The R6 engine E60s are still MY05 cars through July production of this year in the rest of the world.

Here in Europe - generally speaking - a new model year production starts after the summer holidays (August/September) when some car manufacterers have closed their facilities.

So a MY 2006 (for Europe) is build in August 2005.

Sometimes these new model year prodcuction also include modifications like new engines among others. For example a new E61 550 etc.

I can only guess for the US to have such an early introduction of MY 2006 but it must be some marketing trick. (think also why in the US some many Europe cars are introduced much later.... E61 etc. Last but not least I also tend to believe that people in the US are more sensitive (and pre-occupied) towards MY production dates. The newer the better......
