Hi every one. I have only had my E60 530d auto (218bhp) for 2 weeks and i am very happy with the cars performance and fitted toys.
I thought i was going to get better MPG's ?? i have reset the OBC and combined driving the best i can get is 30.7 or 31 at a push ? is this correct. I am yet to do a long trip so cannot coment on any long distances but i do feel this seems a little high.

Can you help

Many Thanks

Heath

Heath,

My 218bhp 530d Manual averages mid to high 30's on the OBC. However, I am not involved in a daily commute and I don't do that many motorway runs. I don't drive for economy, but don't hammer the car all the time. If I drive gently at around 60 on a run, I see low to mid 40's, but this is rare!! Towing a caravan at illegal speeds returns low to mid 20's.

Make sure that you have the iDrive set to Imperial gallons, rather than US gallons (the US gallon is one of the very few things that our friends across the water do smaller than us!!! ). I am told that if your car has had a software update at the Dealer, the iDrive sometimes defaults to US gallons.

I am currently doing a test on mine over several thousand miles to see the effectiveness of a fuel additive (Millers Power Plus Sport 4). Initial indications are that an improvement of around 2 mpg can be had. This is additional to the benefits of better lubrication for our injection pumps. I'll post the results when I have a definitive answer.

If you get tempted to go down the fuel additive road, the Millers Power Plus (and others) are not recommended for cars with particulate filters, hence going for the "Sport 4". If you have particulate filters fitted in the exhaust, then make sure that the additive is compatible with them (i.e. Euro IV compliant). If you are unsure abut your car, if the exhaust tips are straight out, then you have filters, if your exhausts point down, you don't. Sorry if I am explaining things you already know!

Enjoy the car, as I know you will

Mike

Heath

Like you I am a newbie to the E60, again like yourself I have only had the car 2 weeks and I have to say that I am not too impressed with the MPG that I am getting out of my 06 525D Manual M Sport

Been up to Scotland twice with work( from Yorkshire), taking it nice and easy driving it like a vicar's wife I only managed just over 40MPG, came back down the other night and only managed 38MPG and again took it very steady - travelled back at 0400 in the morning so was ideal driving conditions for a good MPG

I am comparing these figures with my last car a 04 BMW 320Cd M Sport with driven very steady would get me over 50mpg and driven like I stole it 40MPG

So far I am wishing I had not got rid of the Coupe !

Hoping things get better or I have make a very expensive mistake

I took delivery a couple of months ago of a new 520d Touring, which according to the specification, does a combined mpg of 53.3.
Even driving it relatively gently I cannot achieve more than about 39mpg so your figure for the 530d, which has a combined mpg of 42.8, does not seem unreasonable.
I have to say though that my previous Audi had a combined mpg of around 45, according to the specification, and I regularly achieved this so one wonders where BMW get their figures from.

My 530xi does 18-19 in the city and 31mpg at a steady 72mph w/AC on...a little more with AC off. Oddly enough, slowing down to 65mph doesn't change the result.

I wouldn't trust the OBC for a number of reasons. Do a proper brim-to-brim test over a few tank fulls.

But the auto does sap the economy, especially at slower/town speeds. Mine will do around 30mpg with lots of urban driving and the cold weather seems to have made it worse. However, on a long journey I can easily hit 45mpg+

How many miles has it done? Also, some members were reporting some cars were just bad on economy... Mine, fortunately, seems to be 'good'!

Also, the American mpg's aren't relevant as they have different size gallons...! (Oh, and they don't get the diesel's... Yet!)

My car has done 56,000. Still getting used to it and finding out new things every day. What about a remap ?? will that help.

Well bedded in then. Strangely, a remap may actually improve mpg - but don't expect a huge improvement!
