Any idea why BMW still has that useless guage. Whats the purpose? Also why at least in the 3 and 5 series does the steering wheel only come in black, and not match the rest of the interior

Its their trademark stupid guage.

Eh??? what? whats wrong with black steering wheel? what you wanted the matching leather steering wheels like the 7er and Mercedes?

I dunno why they only offer it in black... never thought about it.

I don't think the MPG gauge is totally useless. I use it to help select a cruise-control speed that maximizes MPGs.

The digital gauge is an average.... so it takes samples over a longer period of time. The analog is real-time, so it is more helpful in letting you know quickly if your fuel economy is changing.

I like the gauge and just as I use the tac when driving for performance, I use the mpg gaugeit to help me when driving for mileage.

If I worried about mileage even the slightest bit, I wouldn't be driving a 545.

The gauge is just silly -- this isn't the 70's anymore...

Drive as though there's an egg between your shoe and the accelerator pedal. And, remember, 55 saves lives. TELL IT TO CONSUMER REPORTS!!!!!!!

But there are other BMW models than the 545i. And there are places in the world were the fuel is really expensive... The gauge is helping me to find a speed were my engine works efficient. And as you said, this isn't the 70's anymore...

Completely agree - I believe that about 50% of BMW/Merc/Audis sold in the UK are now diesel that tells you something about our concern about mileage and CO2 emissions.

I like the guage. It provides useful feedback on your driving style. If you dont find it useful then simply ignore it.

Instead of ignoring it, I would've liked it if BMW put a more useful gauge in it's place -- even if it means they do it only on the 545. My '89 M3 has an oil temp gauge there instead of the mpg gauge that all other E30 style cars have. The E60 doesn't even have an oil pressure or coolant temperature gauge on any of it's models. (Anyone know what other car manufacturers are still putting this type of gauge in their cars?)

If mpg is important, then following nicktee's advice and driving like there's an egg between your foot and the gas pedal is the best solution since doing this will maximize mpg. In my opinion, there's no need to visually see your instantaneous fuel consumption if you drive smoothly. There will always be times when the needle falls below the "target" mpg but in most cases, it's neccessary in order to drive with the flow of traffic or maintain your speed over hills, etc. (Safety should have a higher priority than mpg.)

That's my $.02...
