Any idea why BMW still has that useless guage. Whats the purpose? Also why at least in the 3 and 5 series does the steering wheel only come in black, and not match the rest of the interior

I don't think the MPG gauge is totally useless. I use it to help select a cruise-control speed that maximizes MPGs.
The digital gauge is an average.... so it takes samples over a longer period of time. The analog is real-time, so it is more helpful in letting you know quickly if your fuel economy is changing.

If I worried about mileage even the slightest bit, I wouldn't be driving a 545.
The gauge is just silly -- this isn't the 70's anymore...

[/quote]Completely agree - I believe that about 50% of BMW/Merc/Audis sold in the UK are now diesel that tells you something about our concern about mileage and CO2 emissions.
I like the guage. It provides useful feedback on your driving style. If you dont find it useful then simply ignore it.

If mpg is important, then following nicktee's advice and driving like there's an egg between your foot and the gas pedal is the best solution since doing this will maximize mpg. In my opinion, there's no need to visually see your instantaneous fuel consumption if you drive smoothly. There will always be times when the needle falls below the "target" mpg but in most cases, it's neccessary in order to drive with the flow of traffic or maintain your speed over hills, etc. (Safety should have a higher priority than mpg.)
