Ahhhh.... okay. You don't typically see a lot of diesels in the US, so I didn't know that. I guess what I said applies to gasoline engines only.
On a good note, diesels are on their way to the US soon, as they appear to have solved the CARB emissions problem.

didnt know that on the motorway you can get low mpg like that on 535d, unless your flooring in 3rd 4th,
i thought they were just as econimical as 530d with just more turbo=power., for the last 510 miles i got an total average of 47.3 mpg inc some quick ones and city drives = 35%, the tank was kinda full.
Needs to be filled now though, went to to bluewater!

I don't know what the brochure claims, but 38mpg on the motorway sounds about right to me for a 2005 535d. I had a 2004 530d auto that was worse than that.
I've now got a 2006 335d, with the "improved" engine and 'box, and if I'm really careful I can see almost 42mpg on a long run (100 miles), but usually I'm getting around 38mpg.
Not bad for a car with 300bhp ...

My Ride: 2005 BMW 535d Mport, Carbon Black, Black Leather, stepped M167s, Visibility Pack, Media Pack, auto dimming mirror, full individually updated 200 W amp and speaker package including new door panels.
is it possible to get the trip computer to give you current consumption as opposed to average.
I know there is the sliding guage under the rev counter but that moves about all over the place when you twitch your right foot.
Resetting the computer before a trip on the motorway averages about 38-40 mpg but once town driving comes in it drops and stays to around 27 mpg.

That sliding gauge is your current consumption - it totally moves around as you drive due to acceleration, decelaration, road gradient, etc. If you were to have a "current consumption" readout on your computer display, it would move around a lot as well for the same reasons - just reset your trip computer MPG to zero and watch what it does as you drive. It will fluctuate wildly, and will settle down as you get more miles behind you. The measure is, by definition, a running average over distance travelled.

My engine is smaller than yours and I only get 22MPG on average from mine
