The auto variants of these 3 cars all have listed MPG's that are very very similar. I know the BMW listed MPG's do not reflect re-world figures but surely, the real world figures should show the same relative difference?

The listed MPG's imply that the 530d is 1.6% down on fuel efficiency on the combined cycle and the 535d is 3% down. Going on previous MPG posts on the forums, these percentages do not seem to hold up.

Thoughts? Suggestions?

Power=fuel. You all ready know what the real world mpgs are like. I went for the 530d over the 535d because potential repair bills scared me off, the 530d will be bad enough if something goes wrong. The down side was that I loose out on the extra 40bhp the 535d would have given me, with my driving style(heavy right foot) I think the 535d would have cost me alot more fuel than im paying now as well.

True, but just for discussions sake, lets say that the 530d and the 535d is not being driven any harder than the 525d. For example, 100 miles of constant cruising at 70mph. Should the cars see the same MPG percentage differences?

The differences are not worthy of debate IMHO if each car is being driven sensibly, if you thrash the 530 and 535 they will drink the fuel quicker than the 525 or 520 as expected, with a car like this if it causes you pain to consider the nitty gritty of exact MPG then maybe these cars are not for you in terms of running costs ?

Nothing to do with running costs. It was simply to resolve curiosity and understanding around listed MPGs and real world MPG figures. I've scoped it to 525d, 530d and 535d as they are the cars I'm have the most understanding of so far with MPG.

No worries, but seriously the points I do make are valid, the 530 and 535 will swallow the juice very quickly if you abuse them , oh and ignore "officially simulated quotes"

Here's an interesting thought for ya. I would venture that if you took a 525d to the track and drove it as hard as possible and someone followed right behind in a 535d, that the 525d would use more gas.

Possibly, and this was kind of what I was trying to start a discussion on. Anyone see the Top Gear show where the M3 followed the Prius round the track and achieve better fuel economy than the Prius? Found a link on youtube:
Because the 525d, 530d and 535d have the same engine, I think the difference will be almost identical.
