Thumbs up

Mine 528 xi was piked up on Apr-21st, about 1000 miles today. Displays around 23-MPG while driving and 450-470 miles to go on full tank (I try to use ACC on freeway as much as I can and it works nice). I hope more better mpg in future as I pass the initial period.

BMW in e-60 manual highly recommends TOP TIER GASOLINE/ GOOD GAS STATIONS rather than octane#(says DO NOT use gas lower than 87 and does not stress for gas 91). Also no mention of any additives that may affect engine life/performance and change in mpg.

Any thoughts or input, Please.

I kept a detailed spreadsheet tracking my mileage for about a year and a half - I noticed a slight increase in gas mileage when I used Top Tier. I only use that now, except on the rare occasion when I'm in an area where I can't find one. I noticed that tire inflation has far more effect than anything else. In fact, my spreadsheet was better at identifying low pressures than the LPM.

I get just under 25 MPG on my 530i.

I also kept a spreadsheet. Within the experimental error, no difference whatsoever. In terms of perfromenace for everyday driving - no difference whatsoever.

I've got to echo UUronL and drjochen. I keep a detailed fuel/mileage spreadsheet and, on my previous car (E39 525i - the current car's an oil-burner), there was slightly better mileage when using higher octane fuel. Small enough that you would probably not notice it unless you're keeping track in detail and keeping an eye on the numbers.

You still want to try out different grades/brands of fuel, though. Here in the Netherlands, we get 95RON (Regular) and 98RON (Super) gas. My dealer told me I could use either, but that the car would run better on 98 and he seemed to be right - although the car ran well on both, it seemed just a little smoother with the higher octane fuel in it. The exception was Shell V-Power, which is 95RON - the car ran like it was filled up with 98. May also depend on your engine - my 525i was happy with either type, but a friend's M3 ran like a drunk camel on anything other than 98RON.

My recommendation - experiment a little. Dunno diddly squat about additives though, so maybe someone else can help you with that.

Very surprised not to see BP on the list. I have used their premium gas religiously for the past 11 years in my Toyota Camry coupe with a high compression engine and the engine is performing better today at 90k miles than it did at 30k miles. Thus, I assumed BP was the way to go for my 545i. Am I missing something?

Was put on a project for about 6 months where I had to drive the same way to and from work everyday 48miles each way. This consisted of about 14 city 34 highway and depending on how Chicago traffic was I had as much as 48 miles city driving(stop and go). I experimented w/ 87, 89, 92 in the car for three week intervals for the 6 months. I don't have my numbers w/ me but here is what my conclusion was. Lower Octain gas, Less $$ per tank, less MPG == Higher Octain, More $$ per tank, More MPG.

I found the cost per 3 week test was almost the same no matter what fuel i put in the car.
