If you dont have Nav then the update wont work. From what I understand it only works on NAV based cars. However, if the dealership says they can do it, then it doesnt hurt to try. If you read the service bulletin careful, it clearly states the work should be charged under the bmw factory warranty, so don let them give you any crap about charging you. Thats bullcrap, my dealer did it for free AND gave me a loaner.

Not totally true. After Sept 2005, even non-Nav cars had the proper hardware to allow MP3 playback in the single, in-dash CD player. But you are right about the warranty issue, they shouldn't be charging for this...

My build is 11/04. Why wouldn't it work? Does when the car was built make a difference?

Yup it sure does... Looks like people given you the answer. The reason is you need CCC (Car Communication Computer) in order to enable MP3 playback and prior to 9/05 only cars with Navigation came with the CCC system. Post 9/05 all cars used CCC, NAV and non-NAV, thats why they can be updated to play MP3s.

Cars w/out NAV prior to 9/05 used the M-ASK (MMI Audio System Kontroller) system which does not support MP3 playback...

Side note... starting in March 2009 CCC will be replaced with CIC (Car Infortainment Computer) first to appear on the X5 and X6... its some Hard Drive based system... Think HD for Music!

+1 nomination for "post of the month"

That will certainly make things easier for me to explain to a BMW dealer next week why they're wrong if they think my 2004 with full Navi can't have MP3 capability retrofitted.

Guys, thank you for all of your help on this issue. I am totally OK with this not working. The reason I was pissed was because the conflicting stories I was getting from the Dealer.

I do plan on getting the ipod adapter in the near future. So, thanks for the advice.

I have been in a 12/04 non-nav 545 that played MP3s. just another data point. Mine (10/04) didn't until the Nav retrofit. And once I got the Dension even that became irrelevant.

That may be the case but that car must had the proper hardware retrofitted, like you did when the Nav was retrofitted...

no, it was a bone stock leased 545 that my friend's father drove around. it was on the old software too, not the grey screen V25 and later.

Is there is a DIY or method for retrofitting the M-ASK with a CCC?

Would updating the software give me anything different? Not worrying about mp3 playback anymore, if I just had the software updated, what would that do for my car? I have no issues right now. I'm just curious.
