Actually i just got this done for free. See attachment below. Also, I can play MP3 CDs in my 6 disc changer in the glove box.
Unfortunately mine is well out of Warranty, and with no Nav I have to stick to "old fashioned" Audio CD's

Don't waste your time in going to the dealer. If your car is a 2004, it will not support MP3. My 545i is a March 19, 2004 build and was at the dealer last week to activate the Bluetooth module, the dealer loaded the car with every available update from BMW to date and no I did not get the MP3 going. The service manager is a very knowledgable guy and he told that the 2004 at least in Canada don't support MP3s.

That is correct, you have to have at least a 2005 build. I handed my SA the SIB they tried it and the mp3 couldnt play. I know this will only work with a 2005. That is why i was able to swap my cd player with a 2005 vehicle.
The bulletin posted above (and a zillion times before) clearly states that CCC based cars (navigation) from start of production (SOP) to 9/2005 can play MP3 discs by just updating progman. Cars built after 9/2005 played MP3 discs from the factory...

I bought my 06 used, but I think it is the regular BMW changer (could be an aftermarket I don't honestly know). I just tried again and it played a burned CD of MP3s just fine.

At a certain production date, were supposed to eventually be able to play MP3 discs in the changer but the announced date came and went so I assumed they never ended up updating the changer hardware to enable it to work. I'm glad to see they finally got it sorted out -- I just don't know what production date or changer part number is the good one...

For what year is this supported? Do you know if this is supported for 2004 models? Thanks

What I think is going on here is that the changer hardware was updated in more recent years to allow MP3 disc playback and since it's usually a dealer installed option, it's possible that an older car has a newer changer installed. (Keep in mind that the changer hardware was the only reason the older cars couldn't play MP3 discs in the past...)
