Thumbs up

Some time ago, I've read here in some post, that the maximum number of files that our cars can read and play is 239. Not in a folder, but on the whole disk. Today I've tried stuffing as many MP3 files on one DVD and apparently all were playable in the car. I could not find one missing.

So what's the story? How many files on a DVD our cars can read? Is there a limit at all?

I keep telling myself to make that test but have not done it. I did one with 189 (no issues whatsoever) , not thinking to test the so called 239 limit. I promise to really do that test this week end. I' m getting ready for a trip up to Spartanburg, South Carolina (X and Z4 mfr plant) next month and can use a "biggie"

I don't know how many files total (I'll see if I can look later) but I have a single-layer DVD that is maxed out (size wise) with MP3's (sampled at 128K).

One of these days I'll try a dual-layer DVD to see how many more I can get going...

Thanks guys. So far it looks like 239 limit is an urban legend.

Which player are you using to play MP3 files on a DVD.

I thought the 6 disc changer and the single dash mounted CD player would only play CD's (not DVD's). The Nav disc player is marked "DVD" but only because the nav data is written on DVD disc, I did't think it was linked to the audio system.

Am I missing something?

yes u are right but the "navi disc" player can read audio, (and mp3) cds. so because the navi slot reads DVDs it seems logical that it can read MP3 DVDs...so if your car already has MP3 capability..you can burn mp3s on a dvd disc and put it in the navi dvd slot..and it will run...now u have alot of space for a lot of mp3s,,,

Not only can the navi slot play MP3 DVD discs, it can also play audio CD discs (not DVD's).

It's clearly tied to the audio system...

Thats great news, I will give it a try.

Does the Nav still work without the disc?

No, NAV cannot get updates without the DVD in slot. I have been doing a massive amount of MP3 conversion over the weekend to try to build my 8GB+ DL DVD. I'm close. About 100 albums. Most MP3s of mine are 192kb with my more recent conversions at 320kb. I have over 800 CDs, with almost each of those dupped in original format at least once (I worked away from home so wife and I had to have copy). I had been gradually converting to MP3 for computer juke box but now more in a hurry for building some DVDs for travel.
