Thanks for all the responses. I have to take this to my dealer and show to him. The thing is they just put 20.02 on my car and in the process of doing it they also had to put a new TCU in. The old one failed. But they did not select to install mp3, which is a real bummer, because I believe it would have worked.

Hi All!
This is my first post, I recently bought E61 535d about 2 weeks ago (12/2004 production). This is my first BMW and I'm very impressed.
Back to the topic I read the info on this forum and went to my dealer and they upgraded the CIP to 20.x and enabled the MP3 retrofit and it works! Thanks guys!
To uwsc11: If you have newer software than 20.00 you can use the mp3, after they enabled this retrofit. You don't need to update the sw, just some configuration needed , they need to select the mp3 retrofit from the rights side menu and send the config. It takes only 1-2 minute.
Anyways the IPOD option is also there, but my service men doesn't know how that could work. ( I expect that you will need some cable like the AUX input...)

My Ride: 2014 550i M-Sport (on order) 2011 335is 6 speed (current) 2005 545i 6 speed (sold)
Adding to the list, my '05 12/04 build 545i also successully took the MP3 retrofit - I requested it to be enabled during my upgrade to 21.1 (TCU also failed as a result of the upgrade and was replaced)
FWIW, I printed and brought with me the official BMW service bulletin on the MP3 retrofit when I went in for service... a little 'spoonfeeding' never hurt anyone.

I have an 2005 (October 04 build data ) 545 with nav. At my last service, in which a SW update was being applied (Bld 21.XX), I told my service advisor to program in the MP3 module. He talked to the service guy and told me my car didn't qualify. (BMW claims you need a later '05 model). I told him to please load the module anyway because it should work. And...it worked perfectly. Just Do It!!
