www.bmw.com recommends mobil 1, castrol, Valvoline (all synthetic),
Mobil 1 exrended oerfomance laste for 15K miles per mobil
Valvoline also have Full synthetic-(High Mileage) for cars above 75K miles

Under free maintenence(50K-miles) BMW changes / tip Oil, whichever is earlier:
any day after 1 year of new car / last oil change
at 15 K miles
if the service oil sign appears

Thanks for the replies. I grabbed a bottle of Mobil 1 0-40w since that's what I'm used to using. Did the price of motor oil go up? I don't remember a quart being $7

You are picking up 100% synthetic so no natural oil based minerals. All synthetics you will see are about double of natural oil. $7 is a bit high though. I know that even Target and Wal-Mart sell Mobil 1. Try them next time around.

I also was warned by my SA at my last check up to NEVER put anything less than 100% synthetic in your car. It will destroy your engine.

Yea, I use to buy my oil from Costco. They sell oil by a case of 6. All I needed was 1 quart to tide me over before the scheduled maintenance so I didn't want to bother with buying a whole case

1)Car doesn't like any smoother after an old 10K oils been changed (The engine has been fully flushed before put new oil in)

2)The oil starts to turn dark again just after 1K mile (No heavy foot in the mean time)

3)And it's more expensive than the rivals

1 - Oil's purpose is to prevent shearing damage and wear. It's purpose it not to repair an engine.

2- Probably an indication of something else is wrong. Oil turns dark due to elements in it.

3- yup...100% synthetic is very expensive. Especially in comparison to natural oil. But you get what you pay for.

1)Yes you're right, but the new oil i put in it performs the same as the old 10K oil (I used to use motul 300V on my MR2 roadster and it definitely give me something that i would like to see e.g performance and MPG)

2)And my engine has done less than 25K miles and checked by BMW regularly & maintain to its highest standard, so there must be something wrong with the ingredients of the oil.

3)the price i compared were all 100% sythetic oil.

The thing i'm trying to say here is mobil 1 is no good for the price u paid and i think other manufacturers got better oil with lower prices.

Yep, you should expect to pay between $5.50-7.50 quart (in the US), depending on where you go. This is synthetic oil, so it carries a good premium.

I just checked in my local Wal-Mart here in NC and they had 0W-40 for $5.36...The regular Pennzoil 10-30 was $2.65.

I've searched and didn't find any info on this topic. I've seen a couple of threads where owners had to top of their oil before the service interval. My low oil warning light came on about a week ago and I haven't driven the car since. I find it odd since I hardly drive the car. I rarely rev the car and I only have 7800 miles on the OD. The car will be 1 year old in February. Instead of driving the car to the dealership I thought I'd just top off the oil myself. My question is, what kind of oil (Brand/Weight) are most owners using for their 550i's? I used Mobil 1 synthetic 0-40w in my last car. Thanks.

Take it to the dealer. Overfilling is far far worse than having low oil.

Also, I wouldn't recommend changing the oil earlier than BMW recommends. My N52 530i went 2 full years (also happened to correspond with hitting 16K miles) without needing a drop of oil - I went by the car's recommended interval even though most feel 1 year is when you should swap out old oil.

1. why should the engine run smoother - its a lubricant, not a noise insulator or balance shaft.

2. surely thats a function of your car, polluting the oil, not the oil itself.

3. perhaps because its good quality?

years ago, i took a turbo to be examined. the guy in the shop (turbo technics in northampton) showed me a turbo that had a conventional oil damage it though deposits blocking up oil holes. he reccomended mobil one as it doesnt cause this kinda damage.

oil consumption - my 520d hasnt had a top up in 33k. On the other hand, ive had GM brand cars in the past where the owners manual stated 500 miles per pint would be normal!
