I've searched and didn't find any info on this topic. I've seen a couple of threads where owners had to top of their oil before the service interval. My low oil warning light came on about a week ago and I haven't driven the car since. I find it odd since I hardly drive the car. I rarely rev the car and I only have 7800 miles on the OD. The car will be 1 year old in February. Instead of driving the car to the dealership I thought I'd just top off the oil myself. My question is, what kind of oil (Brand/Weight) are most owners using for their 550i's? I used Mobil 1 synthetic 0-40w in my last car. Thanks.

My oil is due very soon and i used mobil 1 0w 40 as well (As it says on the sticker), so why 5w 30?

Mobil 1 is sucks and definitely will go with another brand next time!

If I'm not mistaken your oil may be changed under the maintenance program @ one year regardless of the (low) mileage - February is pretty close enough! So, I think you should call your BMW service advisor about the oil level warning and ask him to schedule service. And if you ask nicely maybe they'll leave a spare quart of BMW oil in the trunk for the next time you need to add it before service.

How does it suck? Please quantify. Otherwise a ignorant statement.

Is it normal for the BMW to go through oil this fast? I never had this problem on my Audi which I owned for 5 years.

One quart of oil, with conservative driving, over 7K+ miles would be considered "low" consumption - especially on a new engine. That said, none of my previous BMWs consumed oil between changes (even my turbodiesel). [Avg miles between changes ~ 6K-10K miles]

Until purchasing my '07 530, I would do an oil service by the lights/computer or once a year - whichever came first. My oil of choice = Castrol Syntec 5W50; Used Mobil 1 once in a while or whenever it was on sale.

It is almost inevitable that a new 5-series will need an extra quart of oil before 15k miles. There is a list of preferred oils published in one of the SIBs. Most of the recommendations are for 0w-30 and 0w-40.

Other cars suck oil too. Saab, for example, has its first service visit within 2k miles to change the oil entirely.

Good luck to all. The good news is that we have never heard any claims of damage, etc.

You just add a quart of oil, and you are off to the races.

1)Car doesn't like any smoother after an old 10K oils been changed (The engine has been fully flushed before put new oil in)

2)The oil starts to turn dark again just after 1K mile (No heavy foot in the mean time)

3)And it's more expensive than the rivals
