First the performance figures: -

530i 0-60 MPH 6.9 secs Top speed 155 Ave MPG 29.7
530d 0-60 MPH 7.1 secs Top speed 152 Ave MPG 40.9

What those figure don't tell you is that the 530d seriously out accelerates the 530i between the all important 50-70 MPH band for safe overtaking. With fuel prices being as high as they are here every extra MPG counts. With modern diesels being as powerful, quiet and efficient as they are performance is no longer sluggish compared to petrol equivalents and in many cases is better in real world driving due to the vast torque outputs.

In the UK a lot of these cars will be Company owned and given to employees as part of their remuneration package. We are taxed heavily on this based upon emissions and list price and diesel cars are much more tax friendly.

For nearly a decade, European governments have adhered to a treaty on reducing engine emissions. These have been introduced in stages from standard Euro 1 on. Euro 4 comes into force next year and will make diesel engines in europe the cleanest in the world I believe. To support this we do have low sulphur diesel which has been gradually replacing the old standard diesel fuel in the past 18 months. Diesel engines of all ages are now being run on low sulphur diesel as it is the only type available.

@rodybmw
@ISUK

Thanks for the information. I had no idea that the actual diesel content was different in the US. I guess that some European regulations have positive side effects after all.

He's digging deeper and deeper into the archives -- all the 2-year-old threads were revived last week...

It's not the quantity of the posts, it's the quality that matters...
