You not only don't lose performance, but you would gain performance if you do up to 6000rpm+ frequently. I don't know 5 to 8hp, maybe. Because you rise up hp at top rpm, you'll lose low end torque w/o increasing engine displacement.
Think about Acura TL, Lexus IS350, G35, and M5, etc, you see that they yield high hp at high rpm, but their peak torque is not even equal to hp number like the case of BMW, and you have to raise up to 4000rpm+ to get the peak torque.
Look at MBZ, they have constant and good low end torque from 2000-4000+rpm, but their 5.0L yield only 302(?) hp.
All this means that you trade hp for torque. So, think of torque and hp on a see-saw for a fix displacement. If you increase hp, you'll lose torque
Roads must be different in California. Here there is no good reason to hit 6000 RPM regularly enough for that to factor into your total performance. Unless you are on the track every day, this would not be helping you get from point A to point B.

The latest MB V8 engine has both power (382bhp) and torque (391 lb/ft). BMW needs to bump 550 displacement to true 5.0 liters. A couple of additional cylinders would help too.

the 550i engine is a masterpiece that the germans came up with the only problem is they made it civilized so they could sell it to the masses if the chip was tuned to allow it to breath and exhaust was tuned to allow the bottom end to exit it probally would produce around 400 hp at a normal range problem is no one will address this because that is not what the germans designed the 550 for........but I want one anyone....so I need a different air filter a true dual exhaust that lets the engine breath at the entire torque range....I think I'm asking fo ra M5!!!!!! and my 550 is only 3 weeks old

You guys are sounding pretty jaded! After two weeks in this car, I think its the best damn vehicle BMW has ever produced. Speed, quiet, handling and creature comforts are all here. Maybe you should buy some of those Japanese racing bikes and really fly ...right into the traffic jams we are in most of the time at 0-60 and back again in 3 seconds!
